5 stars Be Careful What You Wish For is a clever and unsettling blend of psychological suspense and speculative thriller that plays with the idea of stories having power beyond the page. Daniel and the shy, gentle Gabby are preparing for a holiday to Kefalonia when a seemingly innocent purchase sets off a chain of disturbing events. An e-book picked up on a whim — and clearly not Daniel’s usual taste — slowly begins to blur the line between fiction and reality. What starts as an odd curiosity becomes increasingly uncomfortable as Daniel notices eerie similarities between the story and their own lives. The tension builds steadily as the e-book appears to change as he reads, almost communicating directly with him and predicting events yet to come. Daniel’s growing obsession with the book is particularly well handled, showing how fear and compulsion can isolate someone from the person they love. Gabby’s frustration and emotional distance feel realistic, making the consequences of Daniel’s fixation all the more painful. I really enjoyed how the author escalates the sense of dread without relying on constant action, instead using atmosphere and psychological unease. The idea that stopping the story might be just as dangerous as continuing is chilling and stayed with me after I finished the book. This is an original, thought-provoking read that asks what happens when curiosity turns into obsession — and why some wishes are better left unfulfilled. A great choice for readers who enjoy thrillers with a supernatural or mind-bending edge.

Well, where to start with reviewing this book? I'm not sure where it would fit on the shelves of a bookshop. Crime? There might be a few of those. Genre fiction? Quite possibly. Horror? There's a serving of that. But this story doesn't really fit neatly in a box. It's the sort of book you accidentally come across, then can't put down. It's entertaining, it's challenging, it's thought - provoking and it's 100% creepy. Daniel likes to read - a lot. As he's contemplating which books to take on holiday to Greece, his wife Gabby decides it's time to get him an e-reader. Fortuitously she finds a nearly new second hand one in a charity shop. It only has one book on it - a romcom. Not Daniel's cup of tea but he can add more at the hotel. Daniel starts reading on the plane and is obviously enjoying the book. Gabby is surprised, but even more surprised when he says the spy thriller is right up his street. So far, so entertaining. But then the story starts changing and starts to reflect things that are happening in their real lives. Then it starts to predict their future actions, then... well I'm not going to put any spoilers here. You'll need to read it for yourself. But suffice to say the ending is satisfying though rather unexpected. Gabby especially comes back from the holiday a quite different woman. The book is fast paced, and you are keen to know what's next, but it also gets you thinking about the role of technology in our lives and our passive acceptance of a variety of 'intelligent' items that could be listening... couldn't they?
