What inspired the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) to launch the Indie Author Bookstore?

ALLi has been supporting indie authors for over a decade and yet we knew there was a gap in the marketplace: no major retailer online allows you to press a button to find all the indie authors – but we have thousands of them across the globe as our members and so we created a reader-friendly showcase of their books listed all together in one place making finding your new favourite indie author or book easy!

How do you select which authors are stocked?

The store features books written and published by ALLi’s members. Any indie author wishing to add their books to the store is welcome to join ALLi as a member to receive this and many other benefits.

Who chooses the purchasing link?
The authors. Some choose large retailers, some are selling direct from their own website: a growing trend in self-publishing, with more than 30% of authors now selling some of their creative work direct.
Are there fees involved for authors?
No – if they are members of ALLi the Bookstore is provided as one of their many benefits.
Will readers want to read indie authored books?
They already do! Analysis suggests up to 40% of ebooks bought are written by indie authors. Self-published authors made up over 50% of Kindle’s Top 400 Books for 2023 and fewer than 50% of authors under 45 now want their next book traditionally published – meaning a majority actively prefer the self-publishing route. So if you’re not reading indie authored books, you’re missing out.
How does this reflect broader creator-economy trends?
Readers are actively searching for indie authors online and often buying direct from them. ALLi has created a vibrant showcase of indie-authored books and allowed authors to select their own purchase links, which can include buying directly from their own website – a core part of the creator-economy trend.
Do you feature themed collections or seasonal campaigns?
Yes we do – on our home page you’ll see 5 sections: latest releases, books of the day and then three themed selections which change every month – for example genres, formats or seasonal themes.
