The Enemy Within: Embedded Cyber Threats in Medical Devices, IoMT, and the Connected Healthcare Ecosystem
(The Future of Healthcare Cybersecurity Series Book 1)
By Dr. Tyrone Wilson, DM
A pacemaker doesn't need Internet access...
...until it does.
An infusion pump doesn't need cloud connectivity...
...until remote monitoring becomes essential.
A hospital bed doesn't need software updates...
...until those updates improve patient care.
Every technological advancement improves healthcare.
Every new connection also creates another relationship that must be trusted.
Modern medical devices are no longer isolated pieces of equipment. They are intelligent, connected computers operating inside one of the world's most critical environments. Beneath every monitor, infusion pump, imaging system, implantable device, and connected healthcare platform lies a complex ecosystem of firmware, embedded operating systems, software libraries, cloud services, wireless communications, and third-party technologies.
Most clinicians never see that hidden ecosystem.
Cybersecurity professionals cannot afford to ignore it.
In The Enemy Within, Dr. Tyrone Wilson explores the rapidly evolving world of connected medical devices, the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), embedded software, firmware, artificial intelligence, and the cybersecurity challenges facing modern healthcare.
Inside you'll discover:
✔ How embedded software shapes modern medical devices
✔ Why firmware has become a critical cybersecurity concern
✔ The hidden software ecosystem inside connected devices
✔ AI's growing role in medical technology
✔ The medical device supply chain and its cybersecurity implications
✔ Practical strategies for improving device resilience
✔ The Wilson Embedded Device Trust Model—a framework for understanding trust across connected medical technologies
Written for healthcare leaders, cybersecurity professionals, biomedical engineers, risk managers, technology executives, students, and researchers, this book bridges the gap between healthcare technology and cybersecurity governance.
Because the greatest cyber threat isn't always outside the hospital.
Sometimes...
The enemy is already within.

5 out of 5 stars Scary! Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2026 Format: Kindle Verified Purchase I knew about the many ways computer technology, Wi-Fi technology and AI technology are used in the medical fields, but it never occurred to me (amazingly) that their are so many areas of vulnerability. When most of us think about hackers, we think about them stealing our personal information. But more dangerous is the idea that a hacker could erase or change information used to make medical information, change the programming on medical equipment such as pacemakers, glucose testing or insulin delivery system or make changes to equipment used by surgeons during operations. Very scary possibilities.
5 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opening Look at Cybersecurity in Modern Healthcare Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2026 Format: Kindle The Enemy Within: Embedded Cyber Threats in Medical Devices, IoMT, and the Connected Healthcare Ecosystem provides a timely and insightful examination of the cybersecurity challenges facing today's healthcare industry. The book explores the growing risks associated with Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) devices, connected hospital systems, and embedded technologies that have become essential to modern patient care. It clearly explains how vulnerabilities in medical devices can be exploited and why securing these systems is critical for protecting both patient safety and sensitive healthcare data. Despite covering a complex subject, the author presents the material in a clear, well-organized manner that is accessible to both cybersecurity professionals and healthcare leaders. Informative and highly relevant, this book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the future of healthcare technology and cybersecurity And in all honesty this is a little scary.
