R K Landing has proven to be an outstanding author! The Silvan is a book of deep and complex world building. The characters are very well developed and become very real as you lose yourself in the story. I was so embedded in the development of the story, my own reality disappeared and I found it hard to stop reading and do necessary things like eat and sleep! Rare is the book that can do that to me! I am totally invested in this story and definitely think anyone interested in good fantasy and elves HAS to read this book and all the rest of the books in this series! I am currently reading what has been written a second time, and it is still sucking me in! About to read book 2 a second time as well!
What a refreshing beginning for an epic fantasy series. I write urban fantasy, but I have always liked epic fantasy tales. The unfortunate thing is that much modern epic fantasy is simply boring. I find myself reading 10 to 20 pages and then stopping because the story is either too familiar, the characters too weak, or the writing too tedious. Thankfully, this is not the case with this novel. The world building is excellent, and the characterization is really what drew me to this series. By the time I finished this novel I felt I knew the characters and could speak with them if I actually met them. The author was able to weave a tale of coming of age, along with a mystery, and the love of nature that is very moving. There are themes of racism and privilege, but they are not in the vain of wokism. Instead, they fit the story very well and are integral to the plot. I look forward to seeing where all the characters end up finding themselves . This is a tale of sorrow and woe, but also much beauty and grandeur. it is my fervent hope that the author can sustain this level of wonder and action in a novel without falling into cliché and repetition. Time will tell, but what a great beginning!
This is the beginning of a wonderful story. The Silvan, is such an unassuming title but it so completely describes Fel'annar, Hwind'ator, our blossoming hero. Little does the reader know as they read the first few pages, that their mind will be consumed with the life of this young Elf. It has been awhile since I have enjoyed a story so much. Our author has woven his life masterfully on the pages of her book and by the end of the first book, we have rejoiced with him and cried for him, we have feared for him even though he is only a character in a book. He has come to life and touched our hearts and minds. I often wonder what it must be like to be a writer with stories to share. What is different in their minds than the minds of other people. I'll never know, but I will be able to enjoy their gifts as they share them with the rest of us.
