Salvation Hall - The Lancefield Murders 1
Formats: E-Book, Paperback
A tainted legacy. A murdered heiress. An elusive killer.
There have been Lancefields at Salvation Hall since wealthy sugar planter Thomas Moses Lancefield acquired the Cornish manor house in 1738. But now the Lancefields are a dying breed, in every sense of the word.
Invited to Penzance to curate the reclusive family’s dubious heritage, genealogist Kathryn Clifton thinks she has stumbled upon the opportunity of a lifetime. The Lancefields have been secretive about the origins of their wealth for generations. What Kathryn hopes for is exclusive access to the family’s private papers. What she gets is a ringside seat for murder.
Called to Salvation Hall to investigate a suspicious death DCI Ennor Price finds all the evidence – and the victim’s family – pointing to an obvious suspect. But Price has never been one to settle for low-hanging fruit and he can’t help thinking that the answer to the crime lies in the sins of the family’s past.
The trouble is, Price doesn’t know too much about history. And it isn’t long before he turns to Kathryn Clifton for help…
Reviews
Any mystery fan will be very pleased with this book. As with Mariah Kingdom's Rose Bennett series, all the elements of a great book are there for the reading. Can't wait for Book 2!
I enjoyed this author's Rose Bennett books, so on a whim I picked up this book thinking I might enjoy it. I admit that I loved it far more than I thought I would! The characters are very well drawn with a no nonsense, down to earth protagonist with an interesting job of curating certain items of historical interest. Her introduction to this family while curating their historical collection shows us a complex family dynamic with varied characters. The backdrop is a gorgeous house, setting and family that were so vividly drawn that I could see it in my mind's eye as I read the book. I look forward to reading more of this series! The historical element to it adds an interesting subtext, and I truly enjoyed
Interesting characters, unusual theme, good detection, this has a Gothic feel to it, and I am intrigued as to what the series it introduces could contain. I liked the clear imagery, and the fine drawing of personalities. I shall look out for subsequent titles.
