Wednesday morning is Bin Day, and after watching men take the trash from the street to their huge truck, David decides that he wants to be one of them someday and starts wandering around the house, looking for items to put inside a bin from his father’s office. From one of his sister’s pencil cases to his other sister’s teddy bear, David puts everything inside the bin before dumping it behind a chair, just like he watched the men do with their trucks. Will his family appreciate what David does, though, by hiding their stuff and making them think they lost important items? Sue Wickstead’s David's Bin Day follows young David and his antics around the house as the boy entertains himself. David’s Bin Day was an adorable read that highlighted a job that is often overlooked. David was a cute little protagonist, and his admiration for the bin men was wonderful to see. He looked up to the men who did that job and wanted to be exactly like them someday. David's Bin Day by Sue Wickstead was an easy-to-read book that young children could connect with, following young David as he plays around the house and learning more about some of the jobs that are often taken for granted. The illustrations were simple but very nice to look at, and they really fit the lighthearted atmosphere of the story. I would recommend David’s Bin Day to all families; it was a fun, quick read featuring a great protagonist and plot!

I read this book to my two year old granddaughter, who is quite taken with busses, trains, helicopters, airplanes, emergency service vehicles and of course the bin lorry, and she absolutely loved it! David's Bin Day is inspired by a true story. It is an engaging and funny story with the most wonderful accompanying illustrations. Written in easily understandable language for younger readers, and introducing a few more difficult words to extend their vocabulary, it made me smile, and has already become a favourite with my granddaughter.
