Formats: E-Book, Paperback

Ages: 12-15, 18+

Thirteen-year-old Nina narrates the story of her mother, Alice, who has always been responsible, proper, and totally uptight. Alice is stressed because her teaching job has been eliminated, but that's nothing compared to the shock when her hippie father drops into their lives. Alice left home at sixteen and never looked back. Now Nina has a chance to know her grandfather and sides of her mother that have been hidden for years... Then the bank sends the letter that leads to Alice's moment in history.

Alice - a modern day ethics story I picked up this short book and read it in one sitting, just a little over an hour, and found myself laughing, crying and getting totally sucked into the story. Yet a day later, the ethical storyline is still sticking with me to the point of sending me online to write about this modern age tale of individual backbone in the face of corporate greed. Oh, the world needs more books like this...short, strong, compelling, but full of inspiration and hope that we not only can overcome the SYSTEM, we can change it and create a world where people count as much as profits.

Who knew what banks could do to entire communities by simply not paying attention? McGuinn’s book uses character development to introduce us to teenage Alice, a surprising piece of her mother’s past, and an unexpected visit from her long-lost grandfather. Once the plot is set, dialogue tells us the rest of the story, with how Alice’s mother fulfills her legacy and brings hope to the situation. With all that’s going on these days, Alice would be great for teens on up, including Baby Boomers who value some lessons from the Sixties. It’s an impressive, quick story of how any of us can take charge of our lives in an unjust situation and make a different for others right where we live. [email protected]
