Reviews
Growing up with addiction, I learned to numb out painful emotions, avoid difficult interactions, and react to the world with fear. The Heart of Resilience gave me fresh and compassionate insights into these protective patterns. As I read the stories interwoven with the concepts, I made one connection after another, and I was able to see myself and my family of origin in a new way: my parents weren’t broken, and neither was I. They had good reasons for developing protective patterns (both the helpful ones and the destructive, addictive ones), as did I. Healing and growth require action along with understanding, and this book provides a solid framework with practical tools to interrupt harmful protective patterns and nurture more resilient behaviors. By the time I finished this book, I could see my own inner strength more clearly and I had new ways to develop that strength–not so that I can be “tougher,” but so that I can live more joyfully. That’s a powerful message and a helpful mindset that we can take into all parts of our lives! Thank you, Meri and Chuck for this wonderful body of work. The Heart of Resilience is a fantastic tool to add to my own toolbox, and I highly recommend it!
