Self-Editing Essentials for Fiction - Self-Editing Essentials
Formats: E-Book
You finished your book. That's freaking amazing. Now let's make sure it gets readers turning pages and becoming fans.
You worked too hard—doing what 97% of people don't do (finish a book)—to fall short at the crucial self-editing stage. If your plot sags in the middle, your characters feel flat, or your scenes lose steam, readers won't stick around. Agents won't either.
This book teaches you how to self-edit like a professional editor (because, hi, I am one), so you can stop second-guessing every sentence and start making your manuscript actually work.
You'll learn how to:
• Fix story structure so readers stay hooked from page one to the end
• Sharpen POV, plot, and character arcs in a way that empowers you
• Cut exposition that's secretly boring everyone
• Deepen interiority without resulting to telling
• Polish scenes, dial up tension, and make your prose sing
• Clean up the technical stuff so you're not paying an editor to fix basic punctuation
This isn't a linear read; it's a toolbox. Choose from 29 targeted topics across 4 editing passes—Story, Scene, Writing, Technical—and focus on what your manuscript needs most.
No fluff. Just a flexible system that meets you where your manuscript is.
Some topics are quick fixes. Others require deeper self-editing. But by working through this process, you'll end up with a better book, one that's ready for beta readers, editors, or agents.
Perfect for:
• Debut novelists who want to query with confidence
• Indie authors who want the best possible version of their book
• Writers who want to reduce professional editing costs and sharpen their craft
• Any novelist tired of "Is this good enough?" spirals
The stronger your manuscript when your editor gets it, the better your published book will be. Hand them a polished draft, and they can elevate it to the next level. Hand them a rough draft, and they can only take it so far within your budget.
You want a better-quality book with fewer DNF readers.
This guide, written by a professional book editor and former teacher, shows you how to get there, with intention, clarity, and maybe a little less panic.
Stop leaving your story to chance. Start editing with purpose.
Reviews
As an independent author I'm so glad I found this resource. My first book went through many rounds of editing and I wish I had had this book to help me get my manuscript in a stronger spot before hiring an editor. I will be following all of this incredible advice for my next novels!
As an editor who regularly works with writers navigating revisions, I see the same struggles repeatedly: authors don't know what needs revising, and even when they do, they don't know how to actually do it. This book addresses both challenges head-on. One concept that particularly stood out was "microtensions"—I don't remember encountering that term before, and I love it. It's an incredibly practical and helpful tip for authors who need to introduce more conflict into their scenes. I also hadn't fully understood the difference between interiority and narrative distance before reading this, and that distinction was fascinating. Compared to the overwhelm of "Where do I even start?" that many authors face, this book empowers writers to handle revisions on their own with confidence. I love the examples provided and how the author showed the skills from each topic in action through revised versions. I'd recommend this book to any author who is overwhelmed by the revision process and needs a practical, succinct guide to help them improve their book.
I couldn't get enough. Perhaps there are other resources out there that are similar, but I don't feel I need them after reading this book. I struggled to edit my work in a focused and systematic manner. I felt like a squirrel, distracted by errors and unable to work on a few elements at a time. This meant I edited the first part of a manuscript really well but had a hard time pushing through the whole thing in a reasonable timeframe. I work much better with a plan, and this book provides one that makes sense and does not overwhelm. It also offers a great refresher on the elements of story and how they work together to create the narrative, which makes me feel confident that I will elevate my editing skills to a much more productive level. I especially appreciated learning more about the interiority of characters and how it can be used to infer emotions and tension while also moving the story forward. While every writer is aware of interiority, having it named and explained transformed it into a multi-purpose tool for engaging the reader without overwhelming them with unnecessary words and creating a more intimate connection between character and reader. There are so many valuable tools included that will help writers at every level. For newer writers, there's guidance on exploring story, scene, POV, and character. For more seasoned writers, there's editing advice including guidance on balancing show and tell and using a list of filter words to identify unnecessary information, clean up dialogue, and ensure a character's thoughts, voice, and actions feel natural and believable. I would recommend this book to anyone who is going to edit a manuscript, whether you have never done it before or want to limit how much you need to spend on a professional editor. There are countless tips, tools, and references that support the process. Editors are incredibly important whether you self-publish or query, and following the process outlined in this book results in a more polished manuscript and makes the publishing process feel less intimidating.
