Relative Strangers

Formats: E-Book, Audio, Paperback

Ages: 16-18, 18+

The McKay family gathers for a week-long holiday at a rambling old house to celebrate the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Robert and Mary. In recent years only funerals and sudden, severe illnesses have been able to draw them together and as they gather in the splendid rooms of Hunting Manor, their differences are soon uncomfortably apparent. For all their history, their traditions, the connective strands of DNA, they are relative strangers.
The family holiday mushrooms, drawing in sundry relatives both estranged and deranged. The machinations of an appalling, uninvited aunt threaten the holiday – and the family – with irreparable damage.
This book will make you question your own family situation. What does it really mean to be 'family'?

Reviews

Apart from its rather shocking ending I absolutely loved this book. It’s a long novel considering the events all take place over just seven days, but the author’s wonderful prose and believable, intriguing family dynamics make for absorbing reading. The writing is full of wit - not laugh-out-loud, but clever and amusing ironic phrases and conversations. Although this is a large family gathering, each character is well defined, and “Granny” is a joy. I found the ending incredibly sad for one young character (trying to avoid a spoiler!) and this very slightly spoiled my enjoyment of the whole novel, but not enough to give it less than five stars!!

Once started, I coudn't put this book down. Beautifully written and observed, the complex politics, desires and heartache of family relationships are at the heart of this book. I laughed and cried, sympathised with some characters and grew angry and frustrated at the behaviour and cruelty of others. The shocking climax of the story was unexpected but in the calm after the storm, bridges are built and faith restored. Allie's debut book has been a pleasure to read and I look forward to many more wonderful books from this clever and thoughtful writer.
