Bewbush Playbus
Formats: Hardback
Ages: 18+
A photographic History book about a 'Playbus' which once operated in Crawley, West Sussex. The project was funded by the 'Queen's Silver Jubilee Fund' by the girl guides.
It was a temporary service providing play opportunities within the new area of the town and also served other areas of need.
It was much loved and was a pioneer in mobile play-work.
Many 'play-bus/mobile projects visited the bus and copied for their own needs.
A charity which survived by good will and love.
The book comes from its exhibition of photographs used to publicize and promote all the possibilities a 'Playbus' could serve.
Reviews
Bewbush Playbus is a factual account of the setting up and running of the Bewbush playbus scheme which sadly closed its doors for the final time in 2003. This book describes the conversion of an ordinary double decker bus into a safe mobile play space for, initially, the under 5's; the learning curve of the volunteers; gaining inspiration from other playbus groups nationally; the changing market as schools started to provide places for children in the September following their 4th birthday; and the trials and tribulations of maintaining a playbus. I found the history very interesting and informative and the book includes lots of pictures which document the various playbuses as a much loved resource within their communities.
This is EVEN BETTER than I expected. I enjoyed the picture books but this has history in it too including buses from all around the country - Exeter to Glasgow. Wonderful vintage photos from all round the country. If you’re looking for a travel inspired project to do with the kids then please check this out
