The Fern Keepers - Duality Novels

Ages: 18+

Damaged. Defiant. Renewed.

2022: Finally free from a controlling relationship, author Cat Kennedy moves into her aunt’s old house. Rapidly running out of cash, she desperately needs to recreate the success of her first novel.

When she discovers a Victorian diary buried in the garden, she’s inspired by the story of Emily, Lady Cleveland, and begins to rebuild her confidence – and the fernery.

But somebody is watching Cat and they want to see her fail.

First, it’s anonymous text messages that grow darker and more threatening. Then a carefully-designed campaign of intimidation that rapidly escalates. Is Cat’s life in danger?

1862: Grieving the loss of her new-born son and suffocated by society’s expectations, Emily Cleveland flees from London and the manipulative Dr Schenley, who she holds responsible for the death of her longed-for baby.

Designing the fernery in the peace of Cleveland House gives Emily new purpose, helping her recover the spirit and self-assurance she had when she was first married.

But even from a distance, Dr Schenley’s insidious influence over Emily’s husband, James, threatens not just her rediscovered independence, but her very liberty.

As Emily fights to convince James of her sanity, and Cat battles an unseen enemy, both women need to find reserves of courage they never thought they possessed.

The Fern Keepers is a compelling dual timeline suspense novel, perfect for readers of Susanna Kearsley and Barbara Erskine. It is a standalone book.

Reviews

This meticulously researched and impeccably crafted novel never pours its credentials down a reader’s throat. Instead, it leads gently at the shoulders of the dual timeline main characters, eliciting a sharp indrawn breath at what at first seems a petty injustice. Yet such build in the narrative until the reader is unable to trust any of the subsidiaries, and quite understands why modern Cat wishes to change all the door locks. Emily, too, realises she is being manipulated by degrees, but at whose behest? Her disapproving mother-in-law, the good doctor, or her husband? As with any controlling relationship, more lies beneath the surface than is shown in the text. A cracking read.

Having loved The Visitor, Sara Sartagne's other novel in the Duality series, I had high expectations of The Fern Keepers and I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed. It's a very absorbing read, beautifully and intelligently written. The writer creates two narratives - one contemporary, the other set in the Victorian era - which are linked by a house, or rather the fernery in its garden. It doesn't take long before you realise that the stories also cleverly echo each other in terms of their theme. I found myself rooting for both characters - contemporary Cat and Victorian Emily - and willing them to win their different battles, either against controlling individuals or controlling society. There's suspense, drama, historical colour and even romance. A great book to cuddle up with during the winter evenings, or in fact, at any time at all!
