Journalist Mike Stanhope has inherited a house from someone he’s never heard of. It sounds too good to be true, and he soon learns it is. Other people were expecting the inheritance, and they aren’t happy.

That’s not his only problem. Despatched to the north to look into a local company, he picks up hints of corporate fraud, and has to fend off the advances of the boss’s beguiling daughter. Then he breaks a confidence by publishing privileged information. Before he knows it, his job is in doubt and his relationship with his girlfriend is on the line.

Gradually Mike realises he’s contending with ruthless people who are determined to keep him in the dark. Questions pile on answers as he searches for explanations.
