Reviews
This is a series of story books for primary children from EYFS to Year6, ideal for teaching a generation of children to make a difference through educating children about the devastating global issues and how important it is to inspire them through education to change attitudes to global environmental problems. Duffy’s Lucky Escape by Ellie Jackson Illustrated by Elizabeth Oldmeadow Under Pressure Media Ltd-ISBN 9781999748500 £7.99 This is the first book in the highly acclaimed Wild Tribe Heroes Series. It is an engaging story, based on true events about a Loggerhead turtle (Duffy) who is rescued, rehabilitated and released after eating too much plastic. It has a very important environmental theme that highlights the plastic problem in our seas and oceans. This beautifully written and illustrated storybook can be used in primary schools and at home to educate the children about this issue and act as a springboard for an environmental topic related piece of work that can combine not only geography and science but many primary school subjects. Stunning artwork captures the young reader and allows a variety of reading ages to benefit from using this book. It is a really inspiring story book that will inspire children to make changes in their views on the use of plastic items which end up in the seas and oceans harming turtles and other habitats. It also educates the children about different sea turtles and has a page towards the end of the book about being a Wild Tribe Hero by helping to reduce plastic in our planet’s oceans. It also can be used with two other books in the series Marli’s Tangled Tale which is about a Puffin who gets tangled in balloons after a balloon release and Nelson’s Dangerous Dive which focuses on a whale who gets into trouble with old fishing nets and needs help to escape The ‘Did You Know Page’ and How Can You Help Page’ at the end are excellent educational additions to the story. Buddy’s Rainforest Rescue by Ellie Jackson Illustrated by Laura Callwood Under Pressure Media Ltd- ISBN 9781999748555 £7.99 This is the fourth book in this highly acclaimed series and focuses on the true story of the impact of deforestation in rainforests as bulldozers clear the rainforest for the palm oil plantations. This environmental issue sees the destruction of rainforest habitats and this is highlighted here by the story of Buddy the Orangutan. The rescue of Buddy is based on true events and once again is a powerful message about the effect of deforestation on the world we live in. Beautifully written and illustrated it will inspire the young reader to learn about relationships between humans and wildlife. The story starts by describing the rainforest that Buddy has grown up in until one day he sees the unnatural sight of a palm oil plantation where the forest used to be. He escapes back to the rainforest shelter only to be confronted by the bulldozer and the forest being destroyed. The story continues with him being rescued by the Orangutan Rescue Centre and later being released back to another part of the Rainforest. The ‘Did You Know’ and ‘How Can You Help Page’ at the end of the Story are both excellent educational additions to the story. This book will create a good deal of discussion about protecting forests habitats and the creatures who live there. Tropical rainforests represent the world’s most diverse ecosystem and their destruction not only sees the destruction of habitats but also are responsible for ever increasing climate change. Hunter’s Icy Adventure by Ellie Jackson Illustrated by Laura Callwood Under Pressure Media Ltd- ISBN 9781999748579 £7.99 This is the fifth book in the highly acclaimed Wild Tribe Heroes series. Like the others in the series it is engaging and beautifully illustrated. It is the story about a Polar Bear trapped by melting ice. The book explores the issue of climate change and how we are impacting our Arctic ecosystem. It has a powerful message while highlighting the relationship between the way we live our lives and the dangers we are causing to wildlife and their habitats through the global problem of climate change. Once again a fantastic theme for Primary Schools to develop a term’s curriculum around. This inspirational book develops the theme of how Hunter the Polar Bear is losing its habitat through ever increasing yearly ice melt and how he becomes stuck on a ledge in a cliff and has to be rescued by a rescue team. He is taken back to hard ice. A moving story that educates children both about the life of a polar bear but also, due to climate change, the ever decreasing habitat they live in. The ‘Did You Know Page’ and ‘How Can You Help Page’ at the end of the Story are both excellent educational additions to the story. This book will inspire the young reader to look at the problem of climate change and the book is so important in educating the young about the problems of climate change that will affect them as they grow up. About all three books reviewed There is a whole term’s Primary Curriculum possible based on any one or more of these books reviewed above. They are important resources teaching children to make a difference to the world they are growing up in. The whole Primary curriculum of English, Maths, Science, Geography, History and Language can be covered using these story books and with online resources provided by Wild Tribe Heroes, schools have a whole education package. I totally recommend these books to primary school teachers and to parents of young children.
