CHRISSIE, a young London office manager, finds her life taking a completely new course on Christmas Eve. A last-minute Christmas shopping and she is first mugged, abducted and dumped in the countryside by a man disguised as Santa Claus and then ‘rescued’ by serial killer JOE, an otherwise cheerful but moody carpenter who keeps his son RICK and wife LOUISE virtual prisoners at a remote house. The second part of the novel, begins on Christmas day, a year later, after Chrissie could escape from the remote house of the psychopathic and murderous poisoner Joe. Now he is the grandfather of her three-month-old baby PHOEBE.Many years later in part three of the novel, Joe is released from prison and the Christmas season arrives. Chrissie, who is a London property investor is happy with her boyfriend TERRY, but is haunted by nightmares of her, now fourteen years of age, daughter Phoebe, being abducted by her paternal grandfather Joe.In this fast-paced contemporary and chilling psychological THRILLER there are many themes. The story illustrates also the weakening impact of myths and secrets on memory and the capacity to relate facts in a coherent manner.
Reviews
"A shocking and multi-layered thriller, Perilous Last-Minute Christmas Shopping by Annie de Muynck is an unpredictable tale of terror, freedom, perseverance, and the occasional horror of the holidays. Written with a matter-of-fact, methodical tone that still pumps suspense into every scene, the plot moves quickly, giving readers a relentless ride through one woman's seemingly endless nightmare. The dialogue is snappy and keeps the pace moving, although more emotion in the relationships and interactions could give the story more appeal. Despite the choppy writing and largely procedural narration, this is an expansive and spine-chilling read, and a perfect guilty pleasure for the holidays." Self-Publishing Review, ★★★★
