Beirut 1975. A British couple newly arrived in the city. An American journalist who knows everybody and fears nothing. His Palestinian girlfriend, beguiling ... and with her own secrets.
When clashes between rival militias break out, the four of them watch from what feels like a safe distance—thrilled at first to be in a place that's the centre of the world's attention. But as the fighting intensifies, so do their relationships. Dangerously. And they discover that in civil war, there are no civilians.
'The Foreign Aide' is a psychological thriller about a marriage and a country, both victims of self-destruction. It's a warning too, about the catastrophic consequences of being drawn into a Middle East conflict you don't understand by people you shouldn't trust. A warning no less relevant today than it was fifty years ago.
Fans of political stories in dark international settings—by authors like Graham Greene or John le Carré—will feel right at home here.
Reviews
I thought it was an amazing read filled with suspense, gravity and intimacy, and of course informed by the author's own experience, without being documentary.
This is the story for you if you enjoy historical drama, psychological tension, and true human drama.
