Reviews

A solid dark fantasy Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2026 Format: Paperback I jumped at the chance to read Nightmare, this dark fantasy novella builds impressively on the foundation laid out and is cranking up the intensity, horror elements, and stakes. Right from the opening chapter, told from the chilling perspective of the dark wizard Kilrog as he summons a fiery nightmare steed under a full moon, the tone shifts to something more sinister and urgent. Where Book One introduced us to the shape-shifting unicorn Argent, the brave Graciela, the mage Clestus, the dwarf Drek, and the steadfast Shivalt through an accidental awakening of ancient evil, Nightmare wastes no time plunging the heroes into a relentless pursuit. A trail of death, withered landscapes, and brutal killings leads Argent and her allies to confront the sadistic drow Onyx and the ambitious Kilrog, whose quest for immortality and dominion unleashes demonic forces, undead horrors, and fiery battles. What stands out most is how RK Jack deepens the characters without slowing the momentum. Argent's dual nature as both majestic unicorn and human form adds layers of vulnerability and power; Grace's growth from wide-eyed adventurer to hardened fighter feels earned through loss and sacrifice; and even the villains feel fleshed out, driven by raw ambition and chaos rather than cartoonish evil.
