R. Stephen Hoffman was reared on a farm in rural Buford, North Dakota, and obtained his bachelor's degree summa cum laude in English Literature and English Language Arts from St. Mary's University of Minnesota. He also holds an M.D. from Creighton University and is a graduate of the residency training program of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society, Washington, DC. As a late teen, he twice was the winner of the North Dakote State Writers' Contest. He was awarded the Plumsock Prize for emerging psychoanalytic writers in 2015. His first novel, Exsules Filii Evae (The Banished Sons of Eve), the first installment in his Three Rivers Trilogy, was published by Iceni Books in 2002 and remains available through the author or as an e-book on Amazon Kindle. His second novel, Missouri River Pericles, the second work in the Three Rivers Trilogy, will be published soon. His writing has also been published in International Psychoanalysis and in various academic journals. He is currently at work on the third novel in the trilogy. He lives with his husband Ken and his son Gunnar on a farm on Maryland's Eastern Shore where they raise hay and Katahdin sheep.
