The Anatomy of Science Fiction Settings: Supplemental - Anatomy of Settings 3.5
Formats: E-Book
Ages: 18+
When I set out to write The Anatomy of Science Fiction Settings, I knew it would be a deep dive—a book that didn’t just explore sci-fi environments, but treated them as dynamic forces in story: thematic engines, symbolic mirrors, and emotional landscapes.
As the manuscript expanded, I made the difficult choice to remove several completed setting chapters to keep the book focused, readable, and printable. But I never stopped thinking about them. These four settings—strange, provocative, and resonant—deserved a home of their own.
This Supplemental Module is that home.
Inside, you’ll find four full setting archetypes that follow the same structure and depth as those in the main book, each offering:
- An overview of the setting
- A discussion on science and terrain
- A summary of the culture and governance layers
- The beliefs and myths that arise
- How the setting influences mindset and identity
- Some potential tension and plot ideas
- Advice on how to subvert and twist your story
- Ideas, exercises, and what-if scenarios
These settings were designed to expand the thematic range of the original collection—touching on alternate time systems, liminal mindscapes, and strange frontiers where identity, memory, or language itself becomes unstable.
Be sure to pick up The Anatomy of Science Fiction Settings for 5x more settings and over 900 pages of in-depth discussion of each. Use them to build new stories, flesh out existing ones, or simply to spark your imagination.
Thank you for exploring these lost worlds with me.
Stories don’t always fit into the boundaries we build for them—but that’s what makes them alive.
