What we read in the headlines is brought to the level of the very men and women tasked with carrying out the United States' national defence policies, giving the reader the perspective of those warriors. The situation the crew of the Obama faces in Pacific Deeps could have been ripped right from the very real geopolitical situation of 2017 between the United States and North Korea, when the world was teetering on the brink of a nuclear exchange with Kim Jong-un. The crew of the Obama are deployed on an emergency WESPAC to act as a deterrent against North Korea while also enforcing the US policy of open seas in the South China Sea against PRC attempts to fortify the Sea as their own lake. If that is not enough pressure for the Obamas’ crew, they discover they have a murderer among their ranks, with no one sure when the next killing will or could take place, and the motive and link to the killings is so perplexing that the crew’s morale is taken to the limit. "This is a story about a nuclear submarine suddenly experiencing a series of murders at sea while at the same time, the US finds itself at the brink of nuclear war with North Korea. The author does a great job of describing even the smallest details, including the smells inside a submarine, noises deep down beneath the sea, various drills performed at sea, and the multiple "friends and foes" of daily life on a nuclear sub. While the storytelling is good, the editing errors made the read less fluent, and influenced my 4-star rating. However, this story is quite enjoyable, and was a great read for a rainy afternoon!"
