Formats: E-Book, Audio, Paperback
Ages: 18+
"Not Lost gathers together in a single volume two previously published collections, The Lyre Speaks True and Divine Comedies, he employs a variety of structures to fulfill those three ends to which poetry aspires: meaning, truth, and beauty. Here is a poet with form and discipline. While not rigidly attaching himself to perfect rhyme, he manages to achieve a striking parallel between sound and sense" - Andrew Benson Brown

James is a very important poet for our times, and although these poems are not about the pandemic, for me there are universal truths there that speak to all of us about what is happening right now. His eloquent language reminds us to think about life, God, our souls. Surely, instead of sleepwalking through our lives we should be paying attention to wise poets and chroniclers like James. ('I called upon the name'). 'To Turn Our Backs' is something I can only wish everyone would read and ponder on! Thank you James Sale for educating, stimulating and inspiring me. I highly recommend Not Lost - (It reminds me of Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience as it moves from darkness to light) because it is the wake up call we all need now!
It is sometimes thought that formal poetry, with rhyme and rhythm, can lose the emotional power thought to be found in free verse. I have never gone along with this, and this book is living proof that it is not the case. Rhyme and rhythm, when used quite subtly, can give words a musical ‘feel’ that can reach the heart. They do here. This book is destined to be a classic.
