Their bond, forged through honesty and mutual respect, has been a sanctuary for both. Only now does Oscar begin to recognise the depth of Jemima’s devotion to him. Oscar sees Jemima in a fresh light and dares to imagine a loving future.

Lady Constance Bagby was imprisoned in a convent to repent her part in her late husband’s treachery. Oscar brought about Bagby’s downfall. When, mysteriously, Sir Benedict Adams, another of Oscar’s adversaries, engineers her freedom, Oscar is placed in grave danger.

Oscar’s father visits bringing trouble to Kepstone. Frederick, his embittered son, returns from boarding school; their relationship is strained.

Will his father and son be his undoing?

Will twice-widowed Oscar, risk his heart for love?

Can the ghost from his past inflict her silent revenge upon everyone Oscar holds dear?

Reviews

Mel Stewart 5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2025 Format: Kindle Edition I had read the previous two books in this trilogy some time ago and as I read this book I was able to recall much of the action and the characters. However, this one was, in my opinion, the best. Lord Oscar Farrington comes into the central role. He is everything I like in a hero, brave, honourable, caring, good looking but also flawed, he is not without faults. You could enjoy this book without having read the previous novels, Betrayal and Secrets but knowing some of the characters past and Oscar's role in them is an advantage. The love story is sweet and clean, no bodices are ripped, although it does not lack romance. Jemima is a woman of her time although she is strong willed and not in the least meek and mild. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast paced adventure with a strong romantic element which is true to the Regency period.
