Many of us have taken at-home familial DNA tests, where people find connections to known and unknown relatives. Most of the time, these tests confirm what we were told by our parents. But what about those who find out their families have been harbouring secrets, sometimes for generations? Secrets that are now being revealed, no matter what the consequences, thanks to advances in science that could not have been predicted by those who covered up uncomfortable truths. About their background, their parentage and, sometimes, the crimes they committed. These issues are what inspired me to write the Karen Copperfield genealogy mystery novel series. Karen is an investigative genealogist who helps people make sense of family secrets revealed by DNA tests as they ask: ‘what happens when nothing you believed is true'?
