The price of freedom is never fully paid.
Kat Wallace thought surviving banishment from Bosch would be her greatest challenge. She was wrong.
Cleared of murder charges but exiled for a year, Kat returns to Edo with her diplomat husband, Takai, and their three young children, attempting to settle into a life far from the pirate nation she calls home. But domesticity doesn't suit a woman bred for danger, and when her banishment ends, Kat makes a choice that will fracture her marriage and reshape her future: she re-enlists in the Bosch Pirate Force.
Back in uniform, Kat finds herself navigating more than military missions. Her new unit includes Lieutenant Will McCloud—a trust-fund engineer she once despised, now becoming someone she can't afford to care about. As her marriage crumbles under the weight of betrayal and distance, and her heart opens to dangerous possibilities, Kat must decide who she truly is: the settled mother Takai wants, or the pirate captain she was born to be.
When a mission to rescue her long-lost friend Carisa from Senator Rob Abernathy's clutches goes catastrophically wrong, Kat loses everything she didn't know she couldn't live without. Drowning in grief and reckless with pain, she embarks on a self-destructive spiral that threatens not just her career, but her life and the family that needs her.
To survive the storm—both within and without—Kat must finally seize the helm of her own ship and chart a course through her darkest waters yet.
The second installment in the Pirates of New Earth series, Navigating the Storm is a gripping tale of love, loss, and the fierce determination to captain your own destiny—no matter the cost.
Reviews
"Navigating the Storm is not your typical pirate book. Rather, it is a blend of science fiction with steampunk and cyberpunk interlaced with realistic human emotions and experiences set in the twenty-fourth century. Action is high paced and riveting. Kat matures as the book progresses; hitting rock-bottom makes her stronger and savvier, and puts her on firmer ground to face whatever lies in the future."
"Kat Wallace is back, swashbuckling her way across New Earth with vengeance scrawled on her heart. I absolutely adored A Merry Life...[and] I was incredibly excited to see what escapades Kat Wallace would get up to next. Safe to say, I was not disappointed. If possible, Navigating the Storm is even better than the first instalment in Kat's tale. Branson isn't afraid to rip your heart out or to make you laugh. Kat's tale isn't just one of a rampaging, gun toting, air-borne pirate; it's one of growth from real trauma, loss, love, heartbreak and laughter. Yes, she's a bad-ass. Yes, she's got a foul mouth. Yes, she's brash and bold and probably too loud. Yes, she's messy and makes some horrific mistakes. But that's what makes Kat so loveable. She's real, she's human, with hard edges that are beginning to melt into an even badder-ass. Kat's tale has brought tears to my eyes too many times to mention. But then, a smile forms as I read Kat's succinct and pointed responses. Overall, Kat Wallace has probably become one of my favourite ever characters. A woman with heart, a wicked sense of humour and who will cheerfully kill you if you wrong her. Bravo."
