Kristen Thomson Sheely is a writer, poet, and fledgling artist. Her memoir, 'Very Dark Places: a memoir of grief, family, and learning to survive unimaginable loss', delves into the darkest corners of her soul as she explores the immense sorrow, guilt, and anger she had to navigate in the aftermath of her son's death. She wrote this book because she believes she has an obligation to share Derek's story so that what happened to him will never happen to another child. She is the author of two novels, 'Blind Corner' and 'Surface Errors', and a forthcoming poetry collection. She is the Executive Director of The Derek Sheely Foundation, a nonprofit that honors her son, increases awareness of traumatic brain injuries, and supports other nonprofits who deliver critical health, housing, and educational services. She writes for 'No Name for This Grief', a grief support blog. She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and their greyhound, Whisky.
