If you ask Joana about her nationality, she usually pauses before answering. Sometimes she says “European” to keep things simple. She has a German passport, but she has lived in Switzerland, England, and Italy. Now, she lives far up North on the coast of Scotland. The transformation from continental European to islander was a delightful adventure for Joana. She has mastered the art of queuing, still tries to learn to lower her voice and tame her Italian gestures, and has improved her skills in discussing the weather with appropriate gravity. All the while, she quietly enjoys every new British quirk she discovers. Joana has been taking photos for over twenty years, both at home in the UK and while travelling around the world. Her photo agency now has more than 30,000 of her images. When she is not travelling or editing photos, Joana writes. She has published travel guides and coffee table books.
