Born in Yorkshire, I grew up in country Australia and returned to the UK as an adult. My first (trad) published book, The Inheritors (1988), was a dystopian novel set after a nuclear war. I wrote it during my final years of school, and it was categorised as 'young adult', although I never intended to be a YA author. After releasing two more books with the same publisher and then parting ways, I spent a long time out in the publishing cold, despite several agents and a growing 'backlist' of completed novels. I finally went indie in 2024 with a new edition of The Inheritors, rewritten for the 21st century. It's now the first in a five-part series, THE SURVIVOR COVENANT. As well as speculative and dystopian fiction, I also write contemporary, historical and fantasy novels.
