Jack Derwood has just won a school-wide contest at Peabody Christian Academy by reading the Bible through in only twelve weeks. Now the high school kids want to beat him up for stealing the prize from the saintly Rachael Holstein. As he’s running away from the Varsity basketball team, Jack is hit by a car. He wakes up in a beautiful and terrifying world. And yet, in the present, his mother is waiting at his hospital bedside with growing fears about the unusual medical treatment he is receiving. Can somebody be in two places at once? Doc Thorson, Scruggs, and Jean try to solve the mystery on their end. But Jack has to tackle the dangers in one world and try to win through to his own time and place. Dangerous enemies and friends in unlikely places meet him along the way.
Reviews
This is a standalone story, even though it has some familiar characters from past series written by the same author. It may seem like a science fiction/fairytale story, but it is so much more. Well keeping you on the edge of your seat as you read, the story brings out good and solid truths over and over again, as you see the characters mature and grow throughout the adventure. The story is obviously written more for an older group of readers, not just children, as it doesn’t just answer every question. Instead, it makes you think, and contemplate in your own mind what some of these things might mean. Without sharing any spoilers, this story is full of adventure, an evil doctor, a wise professor, loyal friends, an alternate universe, a dark castle, and of course, a dragon! There is much more, but I again, I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone!
I hadn’t read any other books in the Peabody High Series so I was coming into this book with little context on the previous one. Fortunately every piece of information needed was explained quickly at the start. I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that the story in The Genesis Experiment was a page-turner. I sat and read through the first two-thirds of the book in one sitting and only put it down to handle real life responsibilities. I was impressed with how the world was fleshed out and how the mystery was resolved. I want to read more! Massi has created a world that I want to learn more about and I’m looking forward to learning more about Peabody and the characters that live there in future entries in this series. Also, I’m highly recommending this book to my nephews and nieces! It’s right up their alley.
