Janette A Owen was born and grew up in Bradford, West Yorkshire, among characters who now influence her writing. Her creative pastimes include costume design, although her lasting passion is creative writing. Among other short pieces, Janette wrote two mumming plays for her husband’s street-theatre group, which they have performed both locally and nationally. The response inspired her to expand into stories and novel writing. One of her short stories won a The Doris Gooderson award. Two others came first and second in another competition of the same year. The Indiculous Grace Dunn was born of Janette’s childhood ponderings of ‘how did that lady turn into how she is?’ This regards a local character commonly known as Polish Anna, whose shouts and raps of her walking stick rang around a local market. Bradford was rich with such characters, and Janette observed the same old comments as people cast their judgements and presumed to know so much while not truly understanding these characters at all. Another novel in the pipeline is about one of the girls who, 50 years ago, were expected to swap school for factory work regardless of their abilities. Janette has taken the decision to self-publish her debut novel and looks forward to seeing her work in print.
