Duarte Figueira was born in London and spent his early years in Portugal before he returned to the UK aged 10. He has had a varied career, with spells as a homelessness worker, full-time trade union official, economic researcher and writer, senior UK civil servant in Whitehall and energy expert at the OECD in Paris, before settling in Whitstable, where he now lives with his partner and elderly cat. His first novel, 'The Ginger Flic Casebook', featuring said cat, was published in 2021. He is working on the second novel of the series. His second, 'The Canterbury Stink' (2026) is a historical crime novel and introduces a 19th Century woman detective, Esther Salomon. He is also a regular reviewer for UKJazzNews magazine as well as a contributor to local magazines in Kent.
