I'm one of your late-in-life writers... late starter and slow writer, but I'm here! Have worked in theatre all my life, hidden away behind-the-scenes, one of the people every show needs to get on stage and be seen. Self-published Displaced Persons, a memoir of Siberia and family. A Latvian woman's moving memoir of her years in Siberia in the 1940's and '50's made me stop a life that wasn't working and carve out space to write and get her story out into the world. The memoir came to me in the form of typed pages written in secret during Soviet occupation of Latvia after release from exile. The plan was to redefine myself by writing about someone else's hard time. As is common with plans, it didn't work out that way. Writing one woman's story took me deeper into the lives of my own Latvian family, some of whom had managed to flee ahead of Russian invasion in 1944, and some of whom had stayed behind, and finally into my own failed marriage. That, in the end, was the story that made its way onto the page and became Displaced Persons, all of us together, all displaced in one way or another and finding ways not just to survive but to live. I'm at last retired, and thinking I might have one more book in me. I live in Cornwall, England, and my heart belongs to three countries: Latvia, Canada and England.
