Reviews

Field of Memories: A Tapestry of Heartwarming Short Stories by D.L. Norris is a compilation of original, autobiographical pieces that lean into slices of life. A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes recalls her mother traveling to Southern California for Disneyland’s dedication, leaving a week of loosened routines with her father, later marked by Disney records and souvenirs. Girls and Curls remembers childhood home permanents done in the garage, producing uneven hairstyles remembered through photographs. In Thirteen Chicks, Norris wins baby chickens at a school carnival, keeps them briefly at home, then accompanies their relocation to an Idaho farm. In Thief of Memories, she traces her father’s life, noting the contrast between the breadth of his lived experience and the narrowed awareness of his final years. Field of Memories by D.L. Norris is a wonderful collection of short stories, made so much better by the fact that they are actually real. I am rarely moved by a memoir written by and about someone I do not know, or know of, but Norris's short format pulled me in straight away. Once I was eyeballs deep in the pages, I could not put it down. Picking a favorite is nearly impossible, but there are two that stood out for me. A Picnic in the Park embraces recurring summer family picnics where simple planning, assigned dishes, park games, and fireflies show how ordinary rituals shape belonging. In the story Second Chances, Norris shares life after marrying Quincy, and how his steady role with her parents, marked by daily help, reassurance, and follow-through, eased uncertainty and fully affirmed their partnership. This is a lovely collection. Very highly recommended.
