I was born in England two weeks before Dad landed on Juno beach on D-Day. After a Scottish school education, from 1962 to 1965 I served in the Intelligence Corps, then emigrated to Australia in 1969, working mostly in corporate organisational development in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, I obtained my BA at the University of Sydney and M Litt in Modern English Literature at the University of New England. Following early retirement in 1999, I lectured at three Sydney universities before returning to England in 2004. I edit the annual journal of the Intelligence Corps, The Rose and The Laurel, as well as Sub Rosa, a triannual that showcases quality writing on the history and heritage of the Intelligence Corps. Besides writing articles for management journals, in 2021 I co-authored a book of poetry written by my friend and me. Working on another poetry anthology and a memoir, I live in Bedfordshire with my wife, not too far from our two inspiring grandsons.

The parallel story of René and Chris began as two young men finding friendship in the early 1960s as regular soldiers in Maresfield, Sussex. From very different backgrounds, interests and subsequent civilian careers they have kept in touch across countries and continents for over 50 years. It became apparent that, independently, both had an interest in and wrote poetry for enjoyment. This flourished and 20 years ago they first mooted the idea of producing a book of their poems together but put it on hold. Fast forward to 2021, now friends for fifty-six years, they renewed their efforts and produced the book, Parallels, in 11 sections of poetry. The parallel poems inside each section are themed, and reflect life and death, family, feelings, journeys and crises. They were inspired in the several countries which separated them but which failed to dull their friendship.
